Workshop Internacional de Negócios e Biodiversidade

Durante a Conferência Rio+20, quando todos os olhares estavam voltados a discutir e refletir sobre um mundo mais sustentável, o Instituto LIFE, em cooperação com a Convenção da Diversidade Biológica (CDB) da ONU e com a Conferência Nacional das Indústrias (CNI), realizou o Workshop Internacional de Negócios e Biodiversidade, como um evento paralelo à Conferência no dia 15 de junho no Rio de Janeiro.

O evento foi uma oportunidade de debater a importância da conservação da biodiversidade no setor de negócios, apresentando ações e práticas já desenvolvidas e propondo novas posturas que devem ainda ser adotadas. Sob o formato de sessões plenárias, seguidas por painéis, o Workshop contou com a presença de importantes representantes dos setores públicos, privados, governamentais e de organizações não governamentais, nacionais como internacionais.

Os principais assuntos do Workshop incluíram indicadores e mecanismos de incentivo à conservação, como a Certificação LIFE, desafios à implementação de práticas mais sustentáveis, sugestões e objetivos para os próximos anos, criação de novas ferramentas e práticas que contribuam com este processo, além de experiências reais já desenvolvidas e realizadas para a conservação da biodiversidade.

Ao final do evento, houve o lançamento da Iniciativa Brasileira de Negócios e Biodiversidade. A Iniciativa faz parte de um amplo programa de engajamento do setor de negócios da Convenção da Diversidade Biológica da ONU e no Brasil esse processo está sendo liderado pela CNI, que sediará o primeiro Secretariado Executivo da Iniciativa, CEBDS, MEBB e Instituto LIFE.

During Rio + 20 Conference – when everyone was discussing and reflecting about a more sustainable world – LIFE Institute in cooperation with CBD and the Confederation of Industries in Brazil and sponsored by Faber-Castell, Votorantim Group and Boticario Group, organized the International Workshop on Business and Biodiversity.

The event was a great opportunity to discuss the importance of biodiversity conservation within the business sector and presented best practice examples. During the plenary and discussion sessions, the workshop had representatives from business sector, public sector, NGOs and academia. The main topics discussed were indicators and mechanisms aimed at biodiversity conservation such as LIFE Certification, challenges to the implementation of more sustainable methods,  real life experiences and next steps.

At the end of the session, there was the launch of the Brazilian Business and Biodiversity Initiative, which is part of CBD’s program on private sector engagement. In Brazil, the initiative is led by CNI, host of the first Executive Secretariat, CEBDS, MEBB and LIFE Institute.
