JTI and LIFE Institute Partnership for Biodiversity Management

5 March 2019

Since 2017, LIFE Institute has been implementing a project with JTI Brazil to improve the company’s environmental management, focusing on biodiversity conservation. Through the use of the management software – LIFE Key – JTI is getting to know the impacts on biodiversity from its operational units and its entire supply chain, in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil.

One of the main benefits of this partnership is reflected in information management: the organization and standardization of environmental data allows identifying and quantifying the impacts that the activity has on biodiversity, clarifying the existing opportunities for the maintenance of ecosystem services, on which the company depends. The management of these data can assist them on the establishment of concrete biodiversity conservation strategies.

Through this work, the impact of 100% of JTI tobacco suppliers in Brazil was analyzed. More than 12,700 producers were evaluated and clustered in 253 groups, according to their location and the characteristics of their management productions.

This year, the project was submitted to the Sustainability Awards, an international JTI award that recognizes the best sustainability initiatives developed by all JTI units worldwide.
