LIFE Standard on Sustainable Territorial Management

The LIFE Standard on Sustainable Territorial Management defines Environmental, Economic, Social, Cultural and Governance Principles, criteria and indicators. With its application, public and private organizations, in rural and urban contexts, can assess their contribution to the sustainability of the territory where they operate.

With the application of the Standard by user organizations and the establishment of a Territorial Committee, it is possible to map the actors, assess the level of user engagement, carry out a diagnosis of territorial sustainability and monitor its long term evolution.

Applied through the LIFE Territorial Software, each user organization identifies and evaluates its role in the transition to a new model of sustainable development, participatory governance and commitment to shared responsibility.

ABOUT THE LIFE STANDARD ON SUSTAINABLE TERRITORIAL MANAGEMENT

The most significant challenges faced in the search for sustainability are issues that happen in large scales and surpass the individual or organizational ability to act. The same way, essential ecological processes occurs in territorial level, outdistancing the limits of farms or even cities.

To deal efficiently with deforestation reduction, food security, pest and disease control, urban sustainability, among others, searching always for the human well-being, it is necessary to expand the scale of analysis and involve several stakeholders.

Ensuring connectivity among environments and ecological integrity in large scale are essential for maintaining economy and productive systems, as well as our existence as society.

Therefore, it is important to develop an international standard for territorial management that scale up the analysis and open opportunities for converging actions to achieve positive social, economic and environmental outcomes for territorial sustainability.
